The process of egg donation

The process of egg donation can be divided into two stages. The first stage is known as ovarian hyperstimulation, where the donors receive hormonal injections that make the ovaries produce several eggs during one menstrual cycle.

Egg retrieval happens during the second stage. In this stage, the mature eggs are picked up from the donor the process is known as transvaginal ultrasound aspiration.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation

There are three types of drugs that women generally receive during the ovarian hyperstimulation phase of donation. Several commercially available medications are available under these three classes:

  • Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Agonist Analogues
  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) or Human Menopausal Gonadotropin (hMG)
  • Human Chorionic Gonadotropin

The process of egg retrieval

Through transvaginal ultrasound aspiration, a tube is attached to an ultrasound probe, and a suctioning needle is passed into each ovary to remove mature oocytes from the follicles. To prevent nausea Oral promethazine(maybe) is used during the egg retrieval procedure. Post-procedure, 1-2 hours of stay is required for the donor in the clinic and then she can return to her home for further recovery. Then a follow-up exam and ultrasound one week post-retrieval. Oral antibiotics such as doxycycline are prescribed to prevent infection.

How Egg Donation Works?

Procedure:

  • We receive eggs from the donor with her consent and some legal formalities. This process will take 12-14 days after the menstruation/monthly period cycle.

How is the egg donation program is applied?

As it is known, in the treatment of in vitro fertilization, a treatment that will provide multiple egg development known as ovarian stimulation is applied to the egg donor to retrieve eggs. In egg donation, this process is done only to the woman who provides the eggs to the Intended Parents. The egg recipient women are not treated for ovarian stimulation. Because the recipient’s eggs are not used due to poor quality of eggs or depletion of ovarian reserve or due to some risks related to treatment or both the ovaries were removed or damaged in the past.

Here, the women who are egg recipients are treated only for the preparation of the endometrial lining of the uterus for greater pregnancy chances. In the treatment applied, the treatment of the egg recipient and the egg donor woman is performed simultaneously. The embryos obtained from the eggs fertilized by the sperm of the recipient male partner can be used fresh or can be used later by freezing. Freshly used embryos are subjected to a microinjection process called ICSI  by taking the sperm of the recipient male partner on the day of collection of the eggs. In the ongoing further stages of IVF with egg donation, procedures are carried out just as in self eggs IVF treatment cycle.
